Biography

Living without Limit  ....excerpts from interview with Nancy Ottaviano, Winning EDGE

In May, 2007, just two months before his 70th birthday, Werner stood atop the summit of Mount Everest!  At 29,035 feet, it is the highest mountain in the world.  Werner is the oldest person in the Western Hemisphere to accomplish that extraordinary feat.  In fact, Werner has climbed the seven highest mountains on each of the 7 continents!   I asked Werner when he first started mountain climbing.  To my surprise, he said, “I was 55.”  I then asked if he was always athletic and fit.  “I played tennis, and enjoyed skiing, but my eating habits were not that good.”  Where he got the drive to pursue something so challenging in the “golden years” of his life? “I guess my drive early in life came from my desire to keep up with my brother who was just 17 months older than me.”  Werner recalled, “My Mother was my biggest cheerleader and she always encouraged me to pursue my dreams.”  He said, “As a boy, growing up on a farm, I dreamed of being an Olympian.  I used to practice pole vaulting in our back yard with a bamboo pole that I cut from our property.”  But, without coaching and better equipment the possibilities of becoming a world champion was not to be.   Many years later, in 1989 and age 52, Werner was in a seminar and was asked to list three things he would still like to do in his lifetime.  He thoughtfully answered that he wanted to climb Kilimanjaro, the Matterhorn and just get to Everest Base Camp.  Werner was not even a mountain climber at this point!  He set out to accomplish these goals and then some...no excuses about age or self imposed limits.  To Werner, age really is just a number.   When asked how he prepared for such a challenge.  “I cut out all junk food, no French fries, no burgers, no coffee.  Ate healthier foods and took high quality supplements.... I got into an exercise regime.”…  “I had a goal and the goal kept me focused and motivated.”   When asked, Werner shared more about the actual experience of climbing the highest mountains in the world. “Mountain climbing is preciously exhilarating.  It is a time for me to live completely in the moment.  I cannot worry about yesterday or tomorrow.  Living so intensely in the present really catapults me into a shift in thinking.  I am plunged into a state of awe and gain a greater appreciation for all the beauty that naturally surrounds us.”   How did you get through the tough times on Everest?  “I visualized flying my kite on the summit. …  I kept telling myself, ‘All I have to do is put one foot in front of the other.’”   I asked Werner how his success with mountain climbing has impacted his everyday life. "I learned more about leadership, communication, team and team building on the mountain than I ever dreamed possible."

What advice, Werner, do you have for those who say, ’Well, he’s exceptional, I can’t do that. I am too old, etc.’    Werner truly feels that anyone can do what he has done.  To achieve any goal, Werner advises that we, “Dream big.  Dream beyond what seems reasonable. Visualize yourself having already completed your goal and from this stance look back at the actions you need to take.” He firmly believes dreams do not to have an age limit attached to them.   Werner feels strongly that so many of our limitations are self imposed.  He is passionate about “the need to have a dream, a goal.”

Werner’s next goal?   Stay tuned - He has so many exciting things planned for the future.   He is not satisfied to be the oldest to summit Mount Everest in the Western Hemisphere.  (There are presently 3 Japanese climbers older than Werner.)  Werner is now planning to go back in 2013, just before his 76th birthday, to become the oldest person in the world to summit Mount Everest.

Werner has a B.Sc. Eng; M.Sc. Applied; MBA. This dyamic entreprenuer and adventurer is also the Executive Producer of the movie, Back From The Edge (designed to change North American health) Werner lives with his wife, Heshie in Yardley, PA .  Werner is an incredible role model of living life to the fullest without any limits.
